General Information:

Ubly Dragway was opened in 1963 by Clarence Bukoski. It received an NHRA sanction at that time. From the beginning, the track has worked within the local community to be an asset. It brings patrons into the area from all over and has held many events over the years to benefit the town. Eventually it was taken over by the Janowiak family and they have done a great job of maintaining the track and the quality of events. Now affiliated with the IHRA, it was selected International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) Division 5 (Thunder) Track of the Year in 2017. One event in particular that is very popular is the "Mopars Against the World" race. The place still looks great as my photos will attest.

As some of you have seem we are in the mix of putting up new concessions and as well as a shower for you racers. It is taking some time but we are doing our best to have it all up and running before the July 4th points race. However this past weekend it looked as if no one could even get close to Bob Snow or Geoff Pitts on saturday. As these two giants meet in the finals of the Arthur Red Memorial Race. Pitts took down some big names to get in the final as the Snowman had everyone scared. Greg Hollywood Kish had a shot at him but the red eye bit hard, hurting his chances. BB Money Shot Rich Brovwer from Lapeer also had a shot at him but. 007 red hurt his chances of making a jump in the poinits. The final seen Pitts take down the 23 Ford T-Bucket of Bob Snow as Pitts took the advantage out of the hole and never looked back. Geoff Pitts was saturdays winner as the snowman took 2nd place. It was a great race as we watched in awe as 2 verterns took it to the limit. In the trophy class we seen Dawn Snickers Jezewski taking on Clint Slow Hands Cadieux in the final. The went 2 out of 3 to see who was going to take down the walley and clam top honors. Both of them cut. 223 reaction times but it was Snickers in that black ice camaro running down the Streetglide of Cadieux. Both raced each other hard and with big smiles all around. In the gamblers race we seen Paul Racer Brown taking on Top James Gorski. Racers 72 challenger taking on Top's 84 mustang. Racer tattooed the tree and never looked back as Top could only try his best to run down the mopar but to no eveal as Paul Brown took the win light over James Gorski. Gorski however had beaten him in the main event early during eliminations but on the day the pair were 1 and 1 against one another. On Sunday the racing heated up as everyone seemed to want a shot at the top honor and cash prize of $1,000. We had a big show down between the one FFFFFFFAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSTTTT Jim Ribble and his door slamming corvette taking on Crazy Horse ford mustang of Greg Hollywood Kish. Ribble came flying out of the hole as he destroyed the tree with a. 001 to kishes. 070. At the strip however they ended neck and neck as kish seemingly ran him down, ribble broke out giving the race away to Kish. Ribble said after the race, When I looked over it was to late even though I was on the brakes. The track was awesome all day long. Hollywood said this after the race, It wasn't my race to win. I kinda sleepin on that one and got lucky. In our trophy class we had Mark Reminder taking on Scott Kries. Kries hit a viper. 028 as reminder had a. 062. They went door to door at the top end as Kries hit the breaks a hair to late breaking out with a 7. 22 on a 7. 23 dial giviing Reminder the win light. In the Junior Dragster Class on Sunday we had Kyle Daniels Taking on Tony Carbone. Carbone was dialed a 23. 75 to Daniels 9. 68. Daniels ran him down a the top end taking the win light For His 1st Ever Win In Competition. In the gamblers race we seen something kind of unheard of and it was kinda cook as Tom Aretakis Jr. was driving Dan Campbells 67 camaro taking on David Bannick and his 91 RS Camaro in the final. Bannick had Jr. at the strip however he would break out giving Aretakis the win light and the first of this new season. POINTS WILL BE REPOSTED ON THE UBLYDRAGWAY. COM AS WELL ON HERE. MY APOLOGIZES FOR THE DELAY. NICK JANOWIAK.
4/24/2011 - Matt Lubeski
I actually have seen an aerial photograph of the opener of the dragway back in 1964. i might see if i can borrow it to put it on here. it is absolutely unbelievable how packed that strip was back in the day. Cars lined up on both sides of m19 cars parked across the road in the field. and cars lined both sides of track all the way down.

History: The year is 1967 Harry Schmidt owns a drag strip in Ubly, Michigan and is looking for a car to campaign in Super Stock competition. He and his mechanic Larry Deitrich approach the owner of Dick Hinterman Ford Of Imlay City Michigan to be there sponsor. A deal is struck and they settle on the 427 Ford Fairlane as the car of choice. The group approaches Ford Motor Companies Special Vehicles Operations. A car is special ordered and immediately sent to Holman & Moody in Charlotte North Carolina to be prepped for Super Stock competition. There, a full blown blue-printing job is done on the engine. H&M then installed one of there own cams and a set of 13.1 pistons. The Fairlanes could run in Super Stock A or B competition depending on the number of four-barrels used. Since the SS/A with two four-barrels is factored by NHRA while the single four-barrel isnt, Harry Schmidt picked the latter. As a result Holman & Moody remove the factory two four-barrel set up and installed a single four-barrel induction system. Ed felt he could be more competitive in SS/C class running a single four-barrel and a automatic against the the Hemis and Corvettes. While at Holman & Moody the factory Top Loader transmission was removed and a specially prepared Police Interceptor C-6 automatic transmission was installed with shift points at 7500 rpm. Before the car was delivered, Holman & Moody not only worked there magic on the engine, but also transformed the front and rear suspension, and installed a custom roll bar. A set of custom Doug headers were delivered and installed. Finally, the Fomoco rear end is fitted with a set of 4.89 gears and a set of Holman & Moody traction bars. Once Holman & Moody were finished with the car it was shipped to Fords experimental garage where the car was picked up by Harry Schmidt. In 1967 Ed Schmidt, Harrys son, ran some pretty good times. The car was running 11.67, well under the current 11.78 record. One of the cars most interesting competitions occurred at the Tri City Drag Strip. Mr. Super Stock Broker, the cars name, had a reputation for beating all comers in the upper mid west. The Tri City Drag Strip was owned by a Chevrolet dealer and the fans at this strip cheered the Chevy competitors. It seams Mr. Super Stock Broker was beating the Chevys badly that night and eventually won its class. The fans and the owner of the track were so upset that they refused to give Ed Schmidt his prize money or his trophy. This incident shut the track down for two hours, eventually the police were called and Mr. Super Stock Broker and its crew were escorted from the drag strip minus money and trophy. The last race that Mr. Super Stock Broker entered was in Canada in 1970. After that race the car was returned to Deitrich Auto Body in Imlay, Michigan and was sealed in a room behind the body shop. It remained there for the next 10 years untouched and unseen. This car has a rich racing history which is fully documented. Mr. Super Stock Broker currently has 250 original miles on the clock and is beautiful condition. The car has retained its original paint and lettering. The interior is like new and it still has the new car smell.
