This motel goes back to 1949 when it was opened and operated by James Burke, a local Lansing-area businessman. He was elected president of the Michigan Motor Court Association in 1954. By 1958, it appeared the contents of the place were being auctioned off. I am not sure if it changed hands or they were looking to remodel. There was a renovation by 1974 with an announcement that rooms could be rented monthly.
That is a common transition these old motels undergo, from vacationers to locals looking for housing. There was a small fire in 1988. It seems a second building of a similar size was added in the 1980's also, directly next door. I assume that was part of the Burkewood also. The transformation to housing was made permanent when the motel closed and Homeless Angels took the place over. I am not sure of the current status but it seems the building still stands.
