Update Feb 4 2024: I finally found this place by searching the phone number on a matchbook from eBay. That came back as the Straits View Motel which was one of the names this place operated under. The structures are still standing as of 2024 but the motel seems to be closed. The multiple mailboxes out front may indicate they are apartments now.
I looked high and low for this place but I could not nail down the exact location. It doesn't exist under this name as of 2023 but it seems to go back to the 1950's. It was operated by Ralph Graham who sold it to Bernard Paquin. It is clear the place was remodeled with an addition to the structure and a new sign which looked amazing. The courtyard in the middle of the lot was also removed. The roof lines were modified to shield the doorways from the sun and rain.
The only other useful info in the newspaper archives was regarding a drive-in restaurant opening across the street in 1954. No luck on pinning down what the name of the drive-in was either. Maybe it was The Chief. The description of "3 miles west of the boat dock" didn't help as that could be interpreted in different ways. I looked along the shoreline near St Ignace for the unique shape on the historical aerial photos but I didn't spot it. Clearly there were (and still are) dozens of motels in that area so it can get confusing.
